The 3 Numbers Every Beauty Professional Needs to Know (And How LiQUiD Can Help)

Many beauty professionals stay busy behind the chair but still struggle to understand where their money is going. They have appointments on the books, clients in the chair, and revenue coming in, yet they often feel like they're working harder than ever without seeing the financial results they want.

That was the focus of ANHC PRO's June Tech Tuesday session, "Booked But Broke: The 3 Numbers Every Beauty Pro Should Know," presented by beauty industry veteran and technology entrepreneur Chrystal Graves, Founder and CEO of LiQUiD. During the session, Chrystal shared the key numbers every beauty professional should understand to make better business decisions and build a sustainable career.

Why Numbers Matter

Chrystal has spent more than 17 years in the beauty industry, building and scaling multiple salon concepts, coaching salon owners nationwide, and eventually selling her salon business before launching LiQUiD. Her message was simple:

"Learning these things allowed me to not just have a job for myself, but to build a career."

She challenged attendees to stop guessing and start using data to understand where they have been, where they are now, and where they want to go.

Number 1: Fixed and Variable Expenses

The first number every beauty professional needs to understand is the true cost of operating their business.

Chrystal explained that expenses fall into two categories:

Fixed Expenses

  • Rent

  • Insurance

  • Licenses

  • Software subscriptions

  • Other costs that stay the same each month

Variable Expenses

  • Back bar products

  • Marketing

  • Client refreshments

  • Office supplies

  • Utilities and other fluctuating costs

Understanding these expenses gives beauty professionals a clear picture of how much money is required just to keep the business running.

Number 2: Your Break-Even Number

The second number is your break-even point.

This is the amount of money your business must generate to cover all business expenses without losing money.

As Chrystal explained, your break-even number answers a simple question:

"How much does it cost me to show up and pay everything in order to deliver the services that I'm doing?"

Without knowing this number, it's impossible to know whether your pricing, booking volume, and service mix are actually supporting your business goals.

Number 3: Your Break-Even Beauty Rate

The third number was one many attendees had never considered before.

Chrystal introduced what she calls the Break-Even Beauty Rate—the minimum amount a beauty professional must earn per hour to cover both business and personal expenses.

Most beauty professionals focus only on salon expenses, but the reality is that their business is also funding:

  • Housing

  • Transportation

  • Groceries

  • Debt payments

  • Entertainment

  • Savings goals

The Break-Even Beauty Rate connects the business and personal sides of finances.

As Chrystal explained, if your personal expenses total $4,000 per month and you work 120 revenue-producing hours, your minimum hourly earning rate must be approximately $33 per hour just to cover those obligations.

Knowing this number helps beauty professionals make informed decisions about pricing, scheduling, and revenue goals.

How LiQUiD Helps

Understanding the numbers is important. Calculating and tracking them consistently is where many beauty professionals struggle.

That's where LiQUiD comes in.

Chrystal describes LiQUiD as a business assistant built specifically for beauty professionals. The platform helps users:

Turning Data Into Revenue

Another highlight of the session was LiQUiD's client preparation and revenue-growth tools.

The platform can help professionals:

  • Create more personalized client experiences

Chrystal emphasized that increasing revenue doesn't always require raising prices.

Often, it comes from better understanding client needs, delivering a stronger experience, and making thoughtful recommendations that solve real problems.
